Abstract:AIM:To investigate the dental plaque control effects of cetylpyridinium chloride mouth wash ( CPC) (Crest Pro-Health mouth wash) in orthodontic patients. METHODS:120 patients with fixed orthodontic appliances [average age (14 ±0.5)y] and with no systematic disease were randomly divided into 2 groups(n=60). All patients re-ceived subgingival tooth scaling and the baseline plaque index was determined by Ramfjord index teeth. The patients were instructed to brush their teeth twice daily followed by mouth wash using 15 mL CPC and clean water(control) for 1 min respectively. The plaque index was measured 1 m, 2 m and 3 m after baseline examination. Results were statistically an-alyzed by SPSS 18. 0 software. RESULTS:Plaque index in CPC group at 1, 2 and 3 month was 9. 93 ± 1. 13, 8. 49 ± 1.14 and 6.87 ±0.89, while that of the control group was 11.65 ±1.29, 11.30 ±1.15 and 11.23 ±0.95(P<0.05), respectively. CONCLUSION:CPC mouth is effective in the plaque control in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.
