Abstract:AIM:To investigate the relationship between serum hemoglobin and microelement levels in chi-dren with severe early childhood caries(S-ECC).METHODS:Among the 403 children enrolled in the study,88 were caries-free and 84 were with S-ECC.Serum hemoglobin level and serum iron,zinc,copper and lead concentra-tion were measured and compared between the 2 groups using SPSS 1 7.0 software.RESULTS:The hemoglobin level (g/L)of S-ECC and caries-free group was 122.8 ±8.5 and 125.3 ±8.7 respectively(P<0.05),the serum iron (mg/L)1 .06 ±0.43 and 1 .30 ±0.45 (P<0.05 ),zinc (mg/L)0.87 ±0.35 and 1 .08 ±0.34 (P<0.05 ),lead (μg/L)62.0 ±8.4 and 48.0 ±7.9(P<0.05),copper(mg/L)0.99 ±0.38 and 1 .04 ±0.36(P>0.05),respec-tively.CONCLUSION:Children wuth S-ECC have lower hemoglobin level,lower iron and zinc level and higher lead level,indicating poor nutritional status.
