An experimental study on the sealing effect of retrograde filling of root canal isthmus

Abstract：AIM:To evaluate the sealing effect of retrograde filling in root canal isthmus,and the influence of isthmus type on the sealing effect.METHODS:1 1 0 maxillary first premolars with complete isthmus (CI)(55)or partial isthmus (PI)(55)at apical 3 mm were randomly divided into group A (CI)(25),B (CI)(25),C (PI) (25 ),D (PI)(25 ),positive control (5 )and negative control (5 ).After root canal filling,the apical 3 mm were cut in group A and C.While in group B and D,the apical 3 mm were cut and tooth canals were retrogradely filled after apicectomy.The depth of dye penetration were photographed and measured under a microscope after being stained by dye penetration method.RESULTS:The depth of dye penetration in groups A,B,C,and D were(6.60 ±1 .01 )mm, (1 .94 ±1 .06)mm,(6.90 ±1 .1 3)mm and(2.95 ±0.99)mm respectively.Significant differences were observed be-tween group A and B,group C and D,and group B and D (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Retrograde filling of root ca-nals can effectively seal root canal isthmus,and the effect is better for complete isthmus than for partial isthmus.
