Abstract:AIM:To investigate the effects of xylitol chewing gum(XCG)and glucose chewing gum(GCG) on saliva flow rate,pH value and oral microorganisms in human.METHODS:1 0 volunteers were selected and they were asked to chew XCG and GCG alternately with 1 0-20 min interal.Saliva was collected before, during and after gum-chewing.The salivary flow rate,pH value and oral microorganisms in the saliva were examined.RESULTS:Both types of chewing gum significantly increased saliva flow rate and pH value(P<0.05),XCG showed stronger effect on salivary flow rate and pH than GCG (P<0.05).The number of total bacteria and Streptococcus mutans in saliva were increased during gum-chewing(P<0.05).However,the number of the 2 microorganisms in saliva decreased to a lev-el lower than before gum-chewing when measured 1 0 minutes after the end of gum-chewing,and XCG showed a greater bacteria decreasing effect than GCG.CONCLUSION:Both chewing gums can increase saliva flow rate and pH value, reduce the number of microorganisms in saliva.XCG have stronger ability to improve oral microenvironment than GCG.
