Abstract:AIM:To examine the immunological regulatory role of IL-23/IL-1 7 axis at different clinical phases of chronic periodontitis.METHODS:Gingival tissues and gingival crevicular fluid(GCF)were taken from healthy volunteers (n=1 0)and patients with periodontitis at active phase (n=9)or stable phase (n=9).Real time quantitative PCR was used to examine IL-23 and IL-1 7 mRNA level in the gingival tissues, and ELISA was used to ex-amine IL-23 and IL-1 7 protein level in GCF.RESULTS:The IL-23 and IL-1 7 mRNA level in gingival tissues and the protein level in GCF were significantly higher in the patients with active and stable phases of periodontitis than those in the healthy controls, and the IL-23 and IL-1 7 mRNA level in gingival tissues and in the protein level GCF in the patients with active phase was significantly higher than those with stable phase (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:IL-23/IL-1 7 axis exists in both the active and stable phases of chronic periodontitis and may have an important role in the de-velopment and progression of chronic periodontitis.
