Abstract:AIM:To investigate the ability of optical coherence tomography (OCT)in the detection of bone defect in porcine mandible.METHODS:10 pieces of bone were obtained from porcine mandibles and ground to be flat plates with the thickness of 5 mm.5 bone cavities with different depth(4.6,4.4,4.2,4.0,3.8 mm)were crea-ted on each bone plate. The cavityies were filled with gelatin to simulate the bone deffecs. An OCT system was used to scan the external bone surface along the bone cavity. When the base of the cavity was captured on OCT image, the probe was adjusted to the center of the cavity base, the distance between the base and the bone plate surface was calcu-lated by the built -in system of OCT.All bone plates were then scanned by micro -CT,and the real thickness between the cavity base and bone surface was calculated and recorded as LCT.Paired t -test,correlation and regression tests were used to evaluate the difference and relationship between.RESULTS:The bone and cavity showed the appearance with different gray scale on OCT images. The maximum imaging depth of OCT in bone tissue was 0.88mm.The meas-urements of bone thickness obtained by OCT were bigger than those by micro -CT (P <0.05),but a strong linear cor-relation was found between the measurements of the two methods (P <0.05).CONCLUSION:OCT may be a prom-ising imaging technique in clinical application to provide quantitative measurement of bone defect.
