Er:YAG laser application in root canal preparation and disinfection

Abstract：Root canal therapy is generally considered to be the most effective method for the treatment of in-flammation and infection of root canal, however, its success rate is 85% to 90% and even lower. The main reason of the failure is the existence of persistent infection, thus effectively complete root canal preparation and disinfection are the fundamental steps to a successful treatment. Er:YAG laser ( erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet) , first applied to the oral medicine in 1964 and approved for the use of root canal cleaning by FDA in 2002, is a kind of solid pulsed la-ser with a wavelength of 2. 94 microns. Er:YAG laser applied in root canal preparation and disinfection, can effective-ly remove the infection. This review gives the summary of the present researches and applications about Er:YAG laser used in root canal preparation and disinfection.
