Abstract:AIM:To determine the effects of psychological intervention in the improvement of oral health of the patients with periodontitis. METHODS:The randomized controlled trial( RCTs) on the application of psychologi-cal intervention in patients with periodontitis were collected using the databases of Cochrane Library, Ovid, Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science and EBSCO. Selection and critical appraisal of the studies were independently screened by two authors, and a quantitative analysis was conducted by RevMan 5. 3 software. RESULTS:8 RCTs with 508 pa-tients were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that psychological intervention was more effective in control-ling the level of plaque than traditional health education [SMD=0. 42, 95% CI(0. 21, 0. 64),P=0. 0001];psycho-logical intervention was found effective in decreasing gingival index[MD=0. 18, 95% CI(0. 02, 0. 33),P=0. 03];but not in increasing frequency of tooth brushing[MD=0. 17, 95% CI( -0. 07, 0. 42),P =0. 17]. CONCLU-SION:Psychological intervention is effective in controlling the level of plaque and decreasing gingival index.
