Abstract:AIM: To investigate the remineralization effect of green tea water extracts on early enamel caries. METHODS:Enamel blocks were made from freshly extracted bovine teeth and were demineralized in demi-naralizing solution to establish early enamel caries. The blocks were treated by different green tea extracts at 0. 1, 0. 05 and 0. 03 g/mL, fluoride toothpaste and distilled deionized water for 1 h respectively(n=5). Afterwards, the blocks were incubated in artificial saliva for 10 d. The Surface morphology of the samples was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Calcium and phosphorus contents were examined by X-ray energy spectrum analysis. RESULTS:The en-amel surface structure in green tea extract groups was more compact and uniform. Green tea extracts dose-dependently increased the ratio of calcium and phosphorus in the enamel. X-ray energy spectrum analysis showed that green tea ex-tract groups had significantly higher calcium/phosphorus ratio than the fluoride tooth paste group and distilled deionized water group (P<0. 05). CONCLUSION: Green tea extracts have stronger remineralizing effects on demineralized enamel than fluoride toothpaste.
