Abstract:AIM:To investigate the effectiveness of Draphat on preventing enamel demineralization during orthodontic treatment. METHODS:68 patients (11-22 years old, 30 male and 38 female) with permanent dentition underwent fixed orthodontic treatment and with maxillary first premolar extraction were invluded. Maxillary teeth were divided into 2 groups at central incisors. The teeth on one side were randomly assigned as experimental group and the contralateral teeth were control group. After bonding, Duraphat were applied once every three months around the teeth brackets of the experimental side. Digital camera was used to take photos 1, 3 , 6 , 9 and 12 months after bonding for the observation of tooth demineralization. Chi-square test was performed to analyze the data. RESULTS:With the ex-tension of treatment time, enamel demineralization of control group increased gradually. While that of experimental group declined gradually after 1 m. The rate and severity of enamel demineralization in experimental side were signifi-cantly lower than those of the control side (P<0. 05). CONCLUSION:Duraphat may prevent enamel demineraliza-tion to some extent in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment .
