Abstract:AIM:To investigate the prevalence of deciduous teeth caries and oral hygiene status of preschool children in the downtown area of Zhengzhou city, Henan Province, China. METHODS:4024 children aged 3-6 years of 16 kindergartens in Zhengzhou city were randomly selected for the study. The prevalence of dental caries and oral hy-giene status were investigated according to World Health Organization criteria and were evaluated by variance analysis, t-test and chi-squaretest. RESULTS:The prevalence of dental caries and the mean decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) values in primary teeth were 60. 36% and 2. 74 respectively. Dental caries prevalence, mean dmft values, and mean debris index simplified ( DI-S) scores were significantly different between age groups. There was no correlation between the prevalence of dental caries and oral hygiene status. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of dental caries in 3-6 year-old children in downtown area of Zhengzhou city is high, indicating that precaution measures against decid-uous teeth caries should be intensified.
