Abstract:Hyposalivation underlying xerostomia is seen after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer and re-sults in diminished quality of life for the individuals. Most of the patients have irreversible damage to their salivary glands due to irradiation therapy, there is no effective regenerative treatment yet. Stem cell therapy may provide a means to overcome this problem and improve the quality of life of the patients. This review discusses the current status in stem cell research with respect to their potential to attenuate salivary gland dysfunction.
