The effect of one stage full mouth disinfection in the treatment of chronic periodontitis

Abstract：AIM:To compare the effect of one stage versus two stage full mouth disinfection (FMD)in pa-tients with chronic periodontitis.METHODS:20 patients with chronic periodontitis were divided into 2 groups(n =10).The patients in group 1 and 2 received one and two stage FMD respectively.Plaque index,bleeding index,pro-bing depth,attachment loss,serum CRP and WBC count were evaluated for both groups at baseline and at 1 month af-ter treatment.RESULTS:Both treatment modalities lead to a significant improvement of the clinical and hematological parameters (P <0.05),no difference was observed between the 2 groups (P >0.05).Patients showed good tolerance to the relevant treatment.The total operation time was shorter in one-stage FMD group than in two-stage FMD group (P <0.05).CONCLUSION:Both one-stage and two-stage FMD can improveme clinical and hematological parame-ters of the patients with chronic periodontitis.One-stage FMD has the advantage of shorter treatment time.
