Fluoride varnish comblined with chlorhexidine gel reduces the recurrence of severe early childhood caries

Abstract:AIM:To evaluate the clinical effect of combined application of fluoride varnish and chlorhexi-dine gel in reducing the recurrence of severe early childhood caries (SECC).METHODS:100 children with SECC were randomly divided into 2 groups.The children in treatment group received fluoride varnish and chlorhexidine gel treatment,those in control group received no treatment.The children were followed-up for 2 years at 6 m intervals. RESULTS:The recurrence rate of treatment group and control group at 6 m,12 m,18 m and 24 m were 6.12% vs 25.58%(P <0.05),13.04% vs 33.33%(P <0.05),21.95% vs 57.50%(P <0.05)and 32.50% vs 72.22%(P <0.05),respectively.CONCLUSION:A combination of fluoride varnish and chlorhexidine gel can reduce the recurrence of SECC.
