Correlation of periodontal condition with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Kazak and Han ethnic population in Mulei, Xinjiang China

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the correlation of periodontal condition with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Ka-zak and Han ethnic groups in Mulei, Xinjiang, China.METHODS:429 type 2 diabetic patients (220 of Kazak and 209 of Han) were included in this cross-sectional study.Probing depth ( PD) , attachment loss ( AL) , community per-iodontal index (CPI), missing teeth and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were measured and recorded.A question-naire concerning oral health behavior was answered by all subjects.RESULTS: Of the diabetic patients, Han ethic group showed higher chronic periodontitis incidence than Kazak ethic group ( p <0.05 ) .Furthermore, Han group showed higher correlation between HbA1c level and AL (p<0.05).CONCLUSION:HbA1c level is positively cor-related with periodontal status in type 2 diabetic patients, especialy in Han people.
