Abstract:AIM: To study the expression of semaphorin 3a ( Sema3a) and its receptor neuropilin-1 (Nrp-1) in the ameloblasts, odontoblasts and periodontal ligament of rat incisor and explore their possible roles in the development of rat tooth .METHODS:Six-week-old Wistar rats were sacrificed and the mandibles were resected .Af-ter conventional decalcification and graded dehydreation , the specimens were embedded in paraffin .Continuous sec-tions at buccal-lingual direction were prepared and stained with HE and immunohistochemical methods .The expression of Sema3a and Nrp-1 in ameloblasts, odontoblasts and periodontal ligament cells of incisor were observed under micro-scope.RESULTS:Sema3a and Nrp-1 were positively expressed in the secretion stage of ameloblasts and odonto-blasts.In the periodontal ligament cells Sema 3a was expressed positively but Nrp-1 was negative.CONCLUSION:SEMA 3A and NRP-1 may play an essential function in the development of dental hard tissue .
