Abstract:AIM:To investigate the effect of calcium hydroxide paste as root canal disinfectant on the apical sealing ability. METHODS:Sixty extracted single-root canal anterior teeth were randomly divided into four groups. The calcium hydroxide paste was used in Group 3 and Group 4, but not in Group 1 and Group 2. The root canals were enlarged with K file and flushed with normal saline (NS) in Group 1 and Group 3, and with 170g/L EDTA plus lOg/L sodium hypo-chlorite (NaClO) in Group 2 and Group 4. All 60 root canals were filled by cold lateral condensation technique. Apical mic-roleakage was determined by using dye penetration test, and measured by stereomicroscope. RESULTS:The samples with calcium hydroxide paste have better apical sealing ability than the samples without calcium hydroxide paste (P =0.0051). There is no statisticall difference in microleakage between samples with two different techniques of medication removal (p>0.05). CONCLUSION:Calcium hydroxide paste can increase the apical sealing ability.
