Abstract:AIM:To analyze the effects of periodontitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on serum IL-17 levels. METHODS:91 patients with COPD, 74 patients with periodontitis,73 patients with both diseases and 42 healthy people were enrolled in this study. Periodontal examinations and pulmonary function tests were performed on each subject. Serum levels of IL-17, IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-a were measured by enzyme-linked immuno -sorbent assay (ELJSA). RESULTS:Serum levels of IL-17 in periodontitis group and COPD group were significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05 ). Serum levels of IL-17 in patients with both diseased were significantly higher than that of simple periodontitis or COPD group (P < 0.05). There was also a positive correlation between the serum levels of IL-17 and IL-6, periodontal depth and attachment loss, in patients of periodontitis group and in patients of both diseases group. CONCLUSION:Serum levels of IL-17 can reflect the health status of periodontal tissue to a certain extent. Its high expression may be involved in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and COPD. For the periodontitis patients, this effect may be related to its promotion of IL-6.
