Abstract:Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) is a recently developed molecular biological technique in which polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-generated DNA fragments of the same length but with different nucleotide sequences can be separated. Without using traditional culture techniques, this technique can analyze the composition and structure of the environmental and human microbial ecosystems. DGGE has the advantages of highoutput and cost-effectiveness. In this review,we summarize the application of this approach to the study of the dental caries, root infection, periodontal microbiology and oral biofilm.
