Prevalence of apical periodontitis in an adult population of Hefei City

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the current status of apical periedontitis (AP) in the adult population of Hefei,therefore to provide information for the health care authorities in Hefei City. METHODS : The cluster sampling was used in this study. A total of 2038 subjects aged 16 to 45 years were enrolled in this study and 50770 teeth were examined. SPSS 17.0 software package was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of AP was 32.1%. The prevalence was 22%,30% and 42.7% in the subjects 16-20,21-30 and 31-45 years old respectively.Among the 50770 teeth examined,5293 (10.4%) showed signs of AP. The prevalence rates of AP in anterior teeth,premolars and molars were 5.1%,8.2% and 21.1% respectively. The AP rate was significantly higher in molars than in the other two groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that there is a close correlation between age and AP,with the increase of age there is an increasing tendency of AP occurrence. AP is more prevalent in molars.
