Abstract:AIM: To examine the effect of the second-generation light-emitting diode (LED) and halogenbased light curing on the mechanical properties of resin composite (Z250),resin modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ⅱ LC) and compomer (Dyract AP). METHODS: Forty specimens were made for Z250,Fuji Ⅱ LC and Dyract AP respectively. The specimens were further divided into two groups. One group was polymerized by halogen light and the other group by LED. After polymerization, compressive strength and surface hardness of the specimens were tested.RESULTS: The LED light produced significantly higher surface hardness values than halogen light in all goups (P<0.05). The compressive strength values of LED-polymerized Z 250 and Dyract AP were higher than those of halogen-polymerized Z 250 and Dyract AP (P <0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the compressive strength value of LED-cured and halogen-cured Fuji II LC (P >0.05). With the same curing method,Z 250 showed significantly higher surface hardness and compressive strength than Dyract AP and Fuji Ⅱ LC (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The second-generation LED curing uint is more efficient than the halogen light curing unit.
