Abstract:AIM: To evaluate the effect of pH on the bactericidal activity of 25 g/L sodium hypochlorite on Enterococcus faecalis within root canal. METHODS: Thirty-two extracted human anterior teeth with a single root canal were infected with Enterococcus faecalis in vitro. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups. Each group was irrigated by 25 g/L sodium hypochlorite at different pH: pH 12 for group A,pH 9 for group B,pH 7.5 for group C and pH 6 for group D. Microbiological samples were collected from root canal before and immediately after irrigation. After incubated in 37℃ carbon dioxide incubator for 24h,the colony forming unit(CFU) of each culture was evaluated.RESULTS:The CFU of all four groups were significantly lower after irrigation (P <0.05). The bactericidal effects increased with the decrease of pH value. The pH 6 group exhibited markedly stronger bactericidal effect as compared with other groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION:The bactericidal activity of 25 g/L sodium hypochlorite increases with the decrease of pH value, and the optimal bactericidal effect is at pH 6.
