Abstract:AIM: To observe the clinical effects of the Periocline-ibuprofen compound in the treatment of chronic periedontitis. METHODS: Periocline-ibuprofen sustained -released gel (P-I) was made by incorperating 10% ibuprofen into Periocline gel. 50 chronic periodontitis were recruited patients into this study. From each patient, 2 teeth from bilateral sides were selected as study object. They were randomly assigned to experimental (P-I) or con-trol (Periocline alone) group. Baseline periodontal parameters, such as bleeding index (BI), probing depth (PD) and attachment level (AL), were measured and recorded. After scaling and root planning, P-I and P were injected in-to the pockets in the experiment group and control group respectively once a week for two consecutive weeks. One and two weeks after P-I and Periocline injection, BI, PD and AL were recorded by a dentists who was blind to the treat-ment. Paired t -test was used to analyze the results. RESULTS: One week after treatment, BI and PD were signifi-cantly decreased in both groups (P < 0. 05). Though AL was also decreased, no statistical difference was found as compared with the baseline values (P >0.05). The PD score in P-I group was greatly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). Two weeks after treatment, BI, PD and AL were further decreased in both groups (P < 0.05). PD and AL were significantly lower in P-I group than that of the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION : Periocline-ibuprofen compound can efficiently control inflammation and reduce tissue damage in chronic periodontitis.
