Abstract:AIM: To examine the plasma endothelin (ET) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in patieuts with chronic periodontitis and periodontical healthy people, and try to find out the possible relationship between the serum ET and NO levels with periodontitis. METHODS: Blood samples of 28 chronic periodontitis patients and 20 periodon-tic healthy volunteers were collected in the morning. Serum endothelin and NO levels were determined by homogeneous competitive radioimmunoassay and nitrate reductase method respectively. The ET and NO levels of periodontitis group were examined once again 4 weeks after periodontal treatment. RESULTS: Plasma ET and NO levels of periodontitis group were significantly higher than that of the healthy group (P <0. 05). The severity of periodontitis and plasma ET and NO levels were statistically correlated (rET =0.839 ,rNO =0. 819 ,P <0.01). The plasma ET and NO levels were significantly decreased after periodontal treatment (P <0.01). CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that the plasma ET and NO levels might be positively correlated with the severity of periodontitis.
