Abstract:AIM:To explore the possible relationship of serum levels of blood lipids,C-reactive protein(CRP)and interleukin-6(IL-6)with chronic periodontitis(CP)and chronic heart disease(CHD).METHODS:A total of 209 subjects were included in this study.Among them,66 were patients with CHD and CP(group C+P),56were with patients CP(group P),44 were patients with CHD(group C)and 43 were healthy volunteers(group H).The periodontal inderes and the serum levels of blood lipids.CRP and IL-6 were measured.RESULTS:The periodontal indexes including calculus index, bleeding on probing, probing depth and attachment loss were significantly different among the four groups. In(C+P),P and C groups the serum levels of high density lipoprotein-chelesterol(HDL-C)were significantly lower, whereas the CRP and IL-6 levels were significantly higher,in comparison to those in the H group(P<0.05).Furthermore,CRP and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in C+P group than in P and C groups(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:HDL-C,CRP and IL-6 might be closely related with the pathogenesis of CHD and chronic periodontitis.A certain correlation might exist between CHD and chronic periodontitis.
