Abstract:AIM:To investigate the mineralization inducing effect of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)on dental pulp cells of SD rat.METHODS:Primary dental pulp cells of rat were cultured on non-coated(control),non-coated plus mineralization solution and PVD-coated 24 well culture plates in DMEM.The mineralization of the cells was determined by measuring the alkaline phosphatase(ALP)activity and by Alizarin Red S(ARS)mineralization assay at 1,4 and 7d after induction.RESULTS:At all time points, both PVA and mineralization inducing solution sisnificantly increased ALP activity and calcium sedimentation(P<0.01)of the cells.PVA showed much stronger differentiation inducing effect than the mineralization-inducing solution(P<0.01).CONCLUSION:PVA is able to induce the differentiation and mineralization of rat dental pulp cells and might be a suitable scaffold for the study of tissue engineering teeth.
