Abstract:AIM:To study the surface modification of oral biomaterials(expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, ePT-FE) by means of oxygenplasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) and to evaluate whether it can improve the antibacterial adhesion efficiency with different kinds of pathogenic bacteria. METHODS : Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) has been used to modify the surface of ePTFE membrane. The modified ePTFE samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and measured by the sessile drop method for static contact angles. The bacterial adhesion to the modifyed ePTFE was studied quantitatively. RESULTS: It revealed that PIII changed surface morphology, improved the water contact angle of ePTFE. A typical rough surface of colliculus is observed on long pulse PIII and the contact angle increases to 153°. The bacterial adhesion efficiency of streptococcus mulans is 26.32% of long pulse PIII ePTFE, and that of S. aureus is 35%. The differences of morphology and contact angle are quite small between the short pulse and virgin ePTFE. The adhesion efficiency of two kinds of bacterium is no significant difference between the short pulse and virgin ePTFE. CONCLUSION: The long pulse PIII treated ePTFE significantly reduced the bacterial adhesion in vitro.
