The effect of amalgam on the growth of mutans Streptococcus: An in vitro study

Abstract：AIM: To understand the antibacterial property of amalgam alloys. METHODS: The influence of amalgams of different preparations and amount on streptococci mutans freshly isolated from child's mouth were compared. RESULTS: Each group of amalgams showed some inhibitory effects on the growth of streptococci mutans. The difference was significant in comparing to the control. CONCLUSION: Amalgam had some antibacterial property.
