Abstract：AIM: To observe the expression and distribution of MMP-2 in the periodontal tissue of first maxillary molar of rat during tooth movement by the orthodontic force. METHODS: 30 SD male rats were grouped according to tooth movement days of 0,1,3,6 and 10d. The orthodontic appliance was applied to set up the model of tooth movement. In situ hybridizasion was used to study the expression of the MMP-2 gene in the periodontium of the first molar . RESULT: In tooth movement groups,the MMP-2 gene expression was observed in osteoclasts, osteoblasts and fibroblasts of periodontium on both sides of movement tooth. The osteoclasts in pressed zone and osteoblasts in tensed zone was more positive stained than that of the controls.CONCLUSION: MMP-2 participated in the remolding of alveolar bone during tooth movement by the orthodontic force.
