Abstract:AIM: To compare the expression of IL-1α and TNF-α m RNA in periapical disease between rats with immuno-suppression and rats without treatment to investigate the effect of immuno-suppression on periapical dis ease. METHODS: Cyclophosphamide, an immuno-suppressant, wa s injected into the abdominal cavity of rats and the expression of IL-1α and TN F-α mRNA was examined with RT-PCR. RESULT:The expression of IL-1α and TNF-α mRNA was detected in periapical tissues at 7th day and formed a pea k at 14th day and slightly decreased at 28th day after the injectio n of the cyclophosphamide. There was no significant difference between the test and control groups. CONCLUSION: Decrease of the perip heral leucocytes has no effect on periapical disease.
