The expression and clinical significance of serum levels of galectin 3 and brain natriuretic peptide in patients with congestive heart failure

Abstract：Objective To investigate the expression of serum galectin 3 and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and its diagnostic and prognostic value in heart failure.Methods Eighty six patients with heart failure treated in department of cardio-logy of Zigong First People's Hospital from January 2016 to October 2016 in Sichuan were selected as observation group, NYHA cardiac function grade II to IV class, of which 28 cases of grade II, grade III in 26 cases, grade IV in 32 cases; also chose 42 cases of volunteers underwent health examination in our hospital as control group. The levels of galectin 3 and BNP in the two groups were measured and the diagnostic value of galectin 3 and BNP in the diagnosis and prognosis of heart failure was analyzed by echocardiography. Patients were followed up for 10 months after discharge and the heart events were observed. Results The levels of galectin 3, BNP and LVEDD in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (t/P=23.494/0.000,t/P=45.741/0.000,t/P=9.296/0.000) and the LVEF value was lower than that in the control group (t/P=11.819/0.000). The higher the cardiac function level, the higher the corresponding level of galectin 3, BNP levels and LVEDD values, whereas the LVEF values were decreased. The levels of serum galectin 3 and BNP in patients with cardiac events were significantly higher than those without heart events (t/P=22.655/0.000,t/P=29.301/0.000). Se-rum galectin 3 was more sensitive to heart failure diagnosis (95.8% vs. 76.9%), and BNP was more specific in patients with heart failure (99.0% vs. 62.4%). The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion The higher the level of serum galectin 3 and BNP, the lower the level of LVEF, which is of great clinical significance in the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with heart failure.
