Effect of sleep quality on blood glucose levels and depression related research in elderly patients with diabetes

Abstract：Objective To investigate the effect of sleep quality on the blood glucose level in elderly patients with dia -betes and correlation between depression and sleep quality .Methods From 2011 October to 2012 October, 75 cases of elder-ly diabetic patients with sleep disorders were enrolled and they were randomly divided into study group and control group , 38 patients in the study group were treated with sleep intervention , 37 cases in the control group did not give sleep intervention , fasting blood glucose (FPG), 2 h postprandial blood glucose (2 hPG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting insulin (FIns) level, calculate the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) were measured before and after treatment , 2 groups of pa-tients were compared with Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) score, Hamilton depression scale (HAMD) score, and eval-uate the relationship between PSQI and HAMD scores in these patients .Results No statistical significance of FPG and 2hPG, HbA1c, FIns and HOMA-IR were found before treatment between the 2 groups ( P >0.05).After treatment, these indexes were significantly improved compared with before treatment in the 2 groups, the difference was statistically significant ( P <0.05);and the study group improved significantly than in the control group , the difference was statistically significant ( P <0.05).Before treatment, 2 groups of patients'PSQI, HAMD scores did not show statistically significant ( P >0.05), com-pared with before treatment, after treatment, the control group's PSQI, HAMD scores were not statistically significant (P >0.05), the study group was significantly reduced ( P <0.05), and the study group was superior to control group (P <0.05).PSQI scores were positively correlated with HAMD score ( r =0.695, P <0.05).It has effect on the blood glucose level.Conclusion Sleep disorders has effect on the level of blood glucose in elderly diabetic patients ;there was a significant correlation between the degree of depression and sleep quality .
