Abstract:Objective The study aims to investigate the association between the use of cow dung as fuel and the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)among non-smoking women in high-altitude areas. Methods A total of 609 non-smoking women aged over 40 from high-altitude areas were included, among whom,305 had long-term exposure to clean energy while 304 to dung fuel.Their pulmonary ventilation function was assessed after bronchodilator inhalation and the correlation between relevant indicators and COPD risk was analyzed. Results The study found that compared to those using clean energy, participants using cow dung fuel showed significantly lower lvalue in indicators such as FEV1(P=0.001),percentage of predicted FEV1(P<0.001),FVC(P<0.001)and percent-age of predicted FVC(P<0.001).Furthermore,COPD prevalence among those using cow dung fuel was 36.2%(95%CI 30.8%-41.6%),significantly higher than the 28.2%(95%CI 23.1%~33.3%)among those using clean ener-gy.After excluding age as a confounding factor,Logistic regression analysis revealed that COPD risk for those us-ing cow dung fuel was 1.439 times higher(95%CI 1.007~2.055)than those using clean energy, with a statistically significant difference(P=0.045).Conclusion The data suggest that the use of cow dung fuel may increase COPD risk among non-smoking women in high-altitude areas. This finding provides a new direction for further research and may positively impact the promotion of clean energy use.
