Abstract:The Lhasa south and north mountains greening project is an important part of the ecological security bar-rier protection and construction in Xizang, and the survival rate of trees is a key factor affecting the project cost and even the determining its success. This study investigated the survival rate of different tree species from 16 sampling spots within 4 sites along the vertical zones of mountains in the greening projects of South Mountain Park,North Mountain Park,Education City and NaiLang Temple. The results showed that:(1)Sophora moorcroftiana,Rosa sericea,Hippophae gyantsensis,Leptodermis pilosa Diels,Cotoneaster polyanthemus were able to self-regenerate above an altitude of 3780m,while Ulmus pumila,Prunus serrulata and Populus spp.were able to self-regenerate in the sample spots below an altitude of 3721m.(2)The interaction effect between altitude and slope aspect is over-whelmingly significant(P=2.29E-3),specifically manifesting as a slower decline in the plant survival rate on sunny slopes compared to shady slopes as altitude increases. On sunny slopes,Rosa sericea can regenerate at an altitude of 4200m,whereas the highest altitude for its self-regeneration on shady slopes is 3,805m;where only Sophora moorcroftiana and Leptodermis pilosa are distuibuted in the survey.(3)The interactions between altitude and ende-mism,as well as altitude and life form are verwhelmingly significant(P-values are 1.76E-4 and 5.73E-5,respective-ly).Specifically,as altitude increases, the survival rate of exotic tree species and arbor decreases drastically, while that of native trees and shrubs does not.For two important exotic arbor species,Picea asperata and Pinus tabulifor-mis,when the altitude exceeds 3750m,the survival rate in all sample spots decreases below 80%.Linear models pre-dict that a natural survival above an altitude of 3860m will be difficult. Therefore, from the perspective of survival-rate,it is recommended to select native tree species especially shrubs(such as Rosa sericea,Sophora moorcroftiana and Leptodermis pilosa Diels)as suitable tree species for the north and south mountains greening alongside the Lha-sa Rier.
