Abstract:Objective: To explore the effect of white noise induction on sleep and neurobehavioral development in preterm infants. Methods: A total of 128 preterm infants hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a medical center's Department of Pediatrics from January to December 2021 were selected as the study subjects. They were randomly divided into a control group (n=62) and an observation group (n=66). The control group received conventional supine position comfort care, while the observation group received white noise playback in addition to the care provided to the control group. The evaluation indicators included the number of preterm infants falling asleep within 5 minutes, total sleep time in 24 hours, and the Neonatal Behavioral Neurological Assessment (NBNA) score. Results: The number of preterm infants who fell asleep within 5 minutes in the observation group was higher than that in the control group on days 1 to 7; the total sleep time in 24 hours in the observation group was longer than that in the control group on days 1 to 7; the NBNA scores of preterm infants in the observation group on day 7 and day 14 were higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion: White noise can effectively induce sleep in preterm infants, increase sleep duration, improve sleep quality, and thus promote neurobehavioral development in preterm infants.
