Symptom experience and coping strategies of intestinal dysfunction in patients after anus-preserving surgery for rectal cancer:a Meta-integration

Abstract:Objective:To integrate the symptomatic experience of bowel dysfunction and coping strategies in patients after anus-preserving surgery for rectal cancer,and to provide a basis for exploring a bowel function management program oriented to the needs of patients after anus-preserving surgery for rectal cancer.Methods:Computerized searches of PubMed,EMbase,Web of Science,Cochrane Library,CINAHL,CNKI,WanFang Data,VIP,and CBM were conducted for qualitative studies on patients'experience of intestinal dysfunction symptoms and coping strategies after anus-preserving surgery for rectal cancer.The search timeframe was from database construction to April 2024.Literature quality was evaluated according to the 2017 edition of the Australian Joanna Briggs Institute(JBI)Center for Evidence-Based Health Care Quality Assessment Criteria for Qualitative Research.Meta-integration method was used to integrate the results.Results:A total of 12 articles were included.Finally 21 findings were distilled and grouped into 9 categories.The final synthesis was 3 integrated findings.Namely,symptom distress disrupts life normality,self-regulation strategies to cope with bowel symptoms,and the need for multidimensional support for symptoms.Conclusion:The needs of intestinal dysfunction in patients after anus-preserving surgery for rectal cancer are diverse.Healthcare professionals should pay attention to the physical and mental health of patients after anus-preserving surgery for rectal cancer.Timely anticipate the challenges and obstacles encountered in the process of bowel function management after anus-preserving surgery.Scientifically construct personalized bowel management programs.Provide patients with information,emotional and social support to improve their bowel management ability.
