Concept analysis of demoralization in the elderly

Abstract:Objective:To define the concept of demoralization in the elderly using Rodgers'evolutionary concept analysis method.Methods:A systematic search was conducted on studies related to demoralization in the elderly from CNKI,WanFang Database,VIP,PubMed,Web of Science,ScienceDirect,EMbase,and the Cochrane Library from the inception of the databases to December 15,2023.Literature was selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,and the concept of demoralization in the elderly was analyzed and defined from 6 aspects:concept evolution,attributes,antecedents,consequences,related concepts,and typical cases,based on Rodgers'evolutionary concept analysis method.Results:A total of 63 articles were included,including 13 Chinese articles and 50 English articles.The conceptual attributes of demoralization in the elderly include incompetence,meaninglessness,depression,and anxiety.The antecedents include general demographic factors,physical factors,psychological factors,and social factors.The consequences include increased social alienation,increased suicidal intentions,decreased quality of life,and others.Conclusions:This study clarifies the characteristic attributes,antecedents,and consequences of demoralization in the elderly.It provides a reference for building relevant theoretical models and targeted intervention strategies in the future,improving the demoralization status of the elderly,and enhancing their quality of life.
