Construction and application of health education program for functional constipation in maintenance hemodialysis patients

Abstract：Objective:To construct a health education program for functional constipation in maintenance hemodialysis patients based on the theory of protective motivation,and to evaluate its application effect,in order to provide guidance for the management of functional constipation in maintenance hemodialysis patients.Methods:A health education program for maintenance hemodialysis patients with functional constipation was constructed based on the theory of protective motivation,using literature review and expert inquiry methods.Convenience sampling method was used to select 188 maintenance hemodialysis patients admitted to the blood purification center of 2 tertiary hospitals in Gansu Province from September 2023 to November as the research subjects.The control group received routine constipation health education,while the experimental group adopted a maintenance hemodialysis patient functional constipation health education program based on the theory of protective motivation.The frequency of constipation self-management behavior implementation,health behavior self-efficacy,constipation,and quality of life were compared between the two groups of patients.Results:After the intervention,the experimental group showed better implementation of self-management behaviors for constipation,including increasing dietary intake of crude fiber,probiotics,and medication use,compared to the control group.The score of the Self-Rated Ability for Health Practices Scale was higher than that of the control group,the score of the Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms was lower than that of the control group,and the score of the Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life Questionnaire was lower than that of the control group,with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).Conclusion:A health education program for functional constipation in maintenance hemodialysis patients based on the protective motivation theory can effectively improve the self-efficacy of health behaviors,relieve constipation symptoms,and improve the quality of life of maintenance hemodialysis patients.
