Abstract:Objective: To explore the current status of fear of disease progression in patients with diabetic retinopathy and investigate its related influencing factors. Methods: A total of 153 diabetic patients treated at the Department of Ophthalmology, Wuxi Second People's Hospital, Jiangsu Province, from January 2020 to December 2023 were selected as the study subjects. The patients were surveyed using a general information questionnaire, the simplified version of the Chinese version of the Beliefs about Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Simplified Form (FoP-Q-SF), and the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ). Results: Among the 153 diabetic patients, 30 developed retinopathy, with an incidence rate of 19.61%. The FoP-Q-SF score was (31.26±5.47) points, the BIPQ score was (38.62±10.16) points, and the MCMQ score was (47.91±6.24) points. Multivariate analysis showed that age, gender, glucose control regimen, number of hospitalizations due to diabetes, and hemoglobin A1c levels were influencing factors for fear of disease progression in patients with diabetic retinopathy (P<0.05). Conclusion: Age, gender, glucose control regimen, number of hospitalizations due to diabetes, and hemoglobin A1c levels are independent risk factors for fear of disease progression in patients with diabetic retinopathy. Medical staff should provide targeted nursing interventions based on these risk factors, which can effectively improve the fear status and enhance the prognosis of patients.
