Promoting and hindering factors of core competence improvement of infectious disease nurses:a qualitative study

Abstract:Objective: To understand the real experience of core competence improvement for infectious disease nurses in Shanxi Province, and to analyze the promoting and barrier factors, so as to provide references for improving the core competence of infectious disease nurses. Methods: A purposeful sampling method was used to select 17 infectious disease nurses from 11 hospitals in Shanxi Province between June and July 2024 for semi-structured interviews. The interview materials were collected, organized, and thematically analyzed. Results: Two main themes and seven sub-themes were extracted. The promoting factors included professional benefits, intrinsic motivation, professional training and education, and team support and cooperation. The barrier factors included research transformation ability, construction of infectious disease specialty, and fluctuating attention to the novel coronavirus infection. Conclusion: There are many factors affecting the core competence improvement of infectious disease nurses in Shanxi Province. Targeted reforms and management are needed to improve their core competence.
