Abstract:Objective: To explore the relationship between health literacy and self-management ability in community-dwelling older adults with chronic diseases. Methods: A convenience sampling method was used to select older adults with chronic diseases from five communities in Hangzhou City between October and December 2023. Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, a health literacy scale, and a self-management ability scale. The relationship between health literacy and self-management ability was analyzed. Results: There was a positive correlation between health literacy and self-management ability scores (r=0.724, P<0.01). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that gender, marital status, family monthly income, educational level, participation in health education, and the dimensions of information acquisition, communication and interaction, willingness to improve health, and willingness to receive economic support in the health literacy scale were factors influencing self-management ability in older adults with chronic diseases (P<0.05). Conclusion: The health literacy of community-dwelling older adults with chronic diseases needs to be improved. In clinical practice, health education should be tailored to the individual or group characteristics of elderly patients with chronic diseases to enhance their self-management ability.
