Abstract:Objective: To explore the characteristics and influencing factors of adherence to traditional Chinese medicine decoctions in elderly patients with chronic diseases using latent profile analysis (LPA), providing a reference for improving their adherence. Methods: A survey was conducted on elderly patients with chronic diseases who received traditional Chinese medicine decoction treatment at our hospital from November 2023 to April 2024. The participants were assessed using a basic information questionnaire, the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the Modified Morisky Medication Adherence Scale for Traditional Chinese Medicine Decoctions (MMAS-8-TCMD). Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to analyze their adherence to traditional Chinese medicine decoctions. Results: The adherence to traditional Chinese medicine decoctions in elderly patients with chronic diseases could be divided into three profiles: 'low adherence type' [98 cases (42.42%)], 'moderate adherence type' [70 cases (30.30%)], and 'high adherence type' [63 cases (27.27%)]. Logistic regression analysis showed that age, educational level, taking multiple decoctions, duration of decoction use, perceived social support, anxiety, and depression were significant factors affecting adherence to traditional Chinese medicine decoctions in elderly patients with chronic diseases (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The adherence to traditional Chinese medicine decoctions in elderly patients with chronic diseases is at a moderate to low level, which can be classified into three latent profiles. It is influenced by age, educational level, taking multiple decoctions, duration of decoction use, perceived social support, anxiety, and depression. Health education should be tailored according to the different adherence levels of elderly patients with chronic diseases.
