Summary of the best evidence for the management of functional constipation in elderly inpatients

Abstract:Objective:To retrieve and summarize the best evidence for the prevention and management of constipation in elderly inpatients during hospitalization,so as to provide a reference for the clinical management of constipation in elderly inpatients.Methods:Based on the"6S"model,relevant evidence on constipation prevention and management of the elderly was retrieved from domestic and foreign databases and professional websites,including clinical decision-making,guidelines,recommended practices,and systematic reviews.The retrieval time was from January 1,2012 to June 30,2022,and the literature quality was evaluated by four researchers.Results:A total of 11 articles were included,including 3 guidelines,4 systematic reviews,3 clinical decisions,and 1 recommended practice.A total of 31 pieces of evidence were summarized from 6 aspects,including evaluation and diagnosis of elderly constipation,health guidance,medication management,medication monitoring,adjuvant therapy,and policy recommendations.Conclusion:This study obtains 31 pieces of evidence for the prevention and management of constipation in elderly patients based on evidence-based methods,so as to provide evidence-based basis for clinical medical workers to manage hospitalized elderly patients with constipation.
