Improvement of recycled aggregate properties by wet carbonization with the addition of diethanolamine

Abstract:To improve the carbonation efficiency of recycled aggregate, the wet carbonation treatment of recycled aggregate was carried out with diethanolamine(DEA)solution of different concentrations. The change of physical properties of recycled aggregate before and after treatment was compared, the phase change of recycled aggregate was studied by XRD,TG and other characterization methods, and the compressive strength test was conducted by preparing recycled concrete with recycled aggregate. The results show that the addition of DEA can promote the dissolution of CO2,enhance the content of carbonate ions in water, and then promote the carbonation rate and degree of carbonation of recycled aggregate. The optimal DEA concentration was 0.02mol/L,at which the water absorption of RA was 2.08%,decreased by 78.7%and 55.6%compared with untreated and conventionally carbonated RA,respectively. The crushing value was 11.27%,decreased by 52.8%and 22.4%,respectively.The compressive strength at all ages of concrete pre-pared by DEA-wet carbonated recycled aggregate is more than 30%higher than that of uncarbonated recycled concrete, and more than 18%higher than that of recycled concrete prepared by ordinary carbonated recycled aggregate.
