Relationships between metal stress and cerebrovascular diseases of colony after disaster
Abstract:BACKGROUND: Natural calamity is a great threat against human society. The colony mental stress and social supports play a positive role in relieving the psychological hurt and disease of survivors. Whereas, report on the relationship between nental stress and cerebrovascular disease after flood is scarce.OBJECTIVE: To study the relationships between mental stress, social support and cerebrovascular diseases of survivors after floods.DESIGN: Parts of small towns of two counties, which seriously destroyed by floods, were selected to assist the investigation, and randomized into a slight disaster group and a serous disaster group according to the damaging degree. A control groap was established at the same time. A diagnosis-based prospective study was carried out in the form of follow-up observation by case control.SETTING and PARTICIPANTS: A disastrous flood happened in Heze.Shandong Province in Augusl. 1996. The most serious stricken areas were chosen: liulou Country of Dongmiug County, Dayan Country of Juancheng Counly, which are about l0 km away from the beach of the Yellow River as iuvestigating spots.INTERVENTIONS: lnterventions from families. neighbourhoods. communities and government snpplies. immediate assistant and reconstruction aid after the disaster.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The contents of investigation: the general social demographic data, the damaging status and experience, life event scale, SCL-90. rating scale of social support, history of cerebrovascular diseases risk factors and the acute cerebrovascular diseases episode after disaster, etc.RESULTS: After the disaster, victims' mental health level descended, which indicated significant difference in both groups compared with the control group( P < 0.01 ): the incidence of acute cerebrovascular diseases in the disaster population went up obviously after disaster, with significant difference( P < 0.01) compared with the control group, moreover, the incidence in the slight disaster group was higher than that in the serious group. Favorable and effective social support could lower the incidence of acute cerebrovascular diseases. Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that lhe occurrence of aeule cerebrovascular diseases was related to many factors, and disaster was an important inducing factor.CONCLUSION: Flood calamity is closely related to the occurrence of acute cerebrovascular diseases. It is of great significance for preventing cerebrovaseular diseases to offer effective interventions after the disaster as soon as possible.
