Impact of informed consent on the preoperative anxiety and postoperative recovery in cholecystectomy patients
Abstract:BACKGROUND: Informed consent and signature is a system performed strictly in our country, however its impact on the physiology and psychology of the patients remains still unclear.OBJECTIVE: To discuss the impact of a detailed informed consent on the preoperative anxiety and postoperative recovery in cholecystectomy patients.DESIGN: A case controlled study was conducted.SETTING and PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-eight participants, aged from 32 to 58 years old, were scheduled for cholecystectomy operation in the Department of General Surgery, Shenzhen Second People' s Hospital.INTERVENTIONS: Sixty-eight patients were randomly divided into study group of 35 subjects and control group of 33 subjects. Patients in study group were personally attended the preoperative conversation and signed the operation consent paper by themselves. The patients in control group did not attend the preoperative conversation, and the operation consent paper was signed by their relatives.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Before obtaining consent and after the consent protocol, anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate and the indexes of postoperative recovery were monitored.RESULTS: The systolic blood pressure, heart rate, degree of anxiety after signing operation consent paper and the postoperative pain in the study group were higher than those of the control group ( P < 0.05 ). The time that the get out of bed and the period that the intestines function recuperating were later in the study group than that in the control gorup ( P < 0. 05).
