A random layer sampling investigation of the health knowledge and hygienic habituation of rural residents in Tal'an city
Abstract:BACKGROUND: Health consciousnesses, life styles and health knowledge are closely related with health and education levels of the population.OBJECTIVE: To understand the effects of health education on the health knowledge, attitude and behavior(KAB) to rural residents.DESIGN: A prospective cohort study.SETTING, PARTICIPANTS and INTERVENTION: Totally 559 farmers including 326 males and 233 females were selected randomly from 6 counties of Tai'an City, Shandong Province for KAB survey by a method of random layer sampling investigation in 2000. The survey was completed by two trained interviewers using a unified questionnaire.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The relationships between the rates of health knowledge understanding, hygienic habituation formation and the education, economic developing levels.RESULTS: There was a higher understanding of basic health knowledge (such as, 'smoking and excessive drinking are harmful'), which was above 97%. There were 97.5% of interviewees brushed their teeth everyday, 59% of them spit in a spittoon, 86.6% had own towel, 44% drank tap water and 53.3% used hygienic toilet.CONCLUSION: Health knowledge understandings and hygienic habituation formations are improved along with education and economic developing levels.
