Outcome evaluation of a community-based stroke prevention and treatment program in Shanghai
Abstract:AIM: To analyse the outcome of a community-based treatment and prevention program for stroke carried out in Shanghai from 1997 to 2000.METHODS: A comprehensive intervenfional program aiming at treatment and prevention of hypertension was carried out in people at risk for stroke who were selected from 6 urban districts and 2 suburban districts. The study was a pretreatment and post-treatment controlled design.RESULTS: After intervention for 2 - 3 years, the administrative rate among the population with hypertension increased 3.4%, and the control rate increased 5.3%. On average, systolic pressure(SP) decreased 3.47 mmHg,and diastolic pressure(DP) decreased 1.74 mmHg. In comparison with the incidence of stroke in 1998, the incidence of stroke in 2000 decreased 19.8/100 000 in the treatment group, while it decreased 13.8/100 000 in the control group. The reduction rate of the incidence of stroke decreased 7%more in the treatment group than in the control group.CONCLUSION: The comprehensive treatment and prevention program can lower the blood pressure in patients with hypertension and decrease the incidence of stroke among these patients.
