Quantitative analysis of motochondria in hippocampal neurons of the aged rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion
Abstract:AIM:To observe ultrastructural changes in hippocampal neurons of the aged rats with incomplete cerebral ischemia/reperfusion and discuss characters and degrees of the morphological changes. METHODS: The aged SD rats were made as models for incomplete brain ischemia. The neuronal ultrastructural changes were observed by the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at different time after reperfusion. The morphometric quantitative analysis on the mitochondria was analyzed by the computer image analysis system. RESULTS:Ultrastructures in hippocampal neurons in group A was as same as group B. The neurons were damaged more severely in group E and F. The volume density, numerical density , specific surface and cristae membrane density of mitochondrial decreased obviously ( P < 0.05) and average volume and sectional area increased remarkably ( P< 0.05) . CONCLUSION:Ultrastructural changes of the mitochondria may be one of the important factors inducing delayed neuronal death after ischemia / reperfusion.
