A stratification multi-level cluster sampling survey on relationship between obesity and diabetes mellitus in 2 497 citizens from Dalian
Abstract:Aim To analyze the relationship among obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Methods 2 497 individuals over 40 year old were randomly selected form urban and rural areas in Dalian. Questionnaire survey was employed in all the subjects, including measuring height, body weight, waistline (WC) and testing blood sugar. Results As the BMI rising, the morbidity of DM increased remarkably, which was 6.5% , 9.43% and 11.7% respectively. And the morbidity of IGT increased also, which was 4.1% , 5.60% and 9.6% respectively. As waistline increased the morbidity of DM increased from 4.5% to 11.39% , and the morbidity of IGT increased form 4.1% to 7.00% . In the populations with abnormal IBM and WC, the morbidity of DM and IGT increased significantly.The morbidity of DM only with abnormal WC was higher than that with single abnormal IBM.Conclusion The morbidity of DM in people with obesity increases significantly, but the morbidity of DM is higher in people with abdominal fat accumulation.
